Literal Origins of Friedrich and Jo and Laurie and Amy In Little Women

In this essay I discuss the literal origins of the canon couples in Little Women and compare them to the books that Louisa May Alcott enjoyed reading and which inspired her.

Louisa May Alcott, the author of "Little Women," was inspired by Susan Warner's book "Wide Wide World" in creating the relationship between Friedrich Bhaer and Jo March. In Warner's novel, the protagonist Ellen Montgomery forms a relationship with John Van Brunt.

Similarly, Friedrich Bhaer and Jo March develop a deep and meaningful relationship in "Little Women."
